From our reviewer, Mandy at Living Peacefully with Children:

About the Book:

Natural Parents Network: Captain No Beard series giveaway

Stuck in the Doldrums, by Carole P. Roman, continues the tale of a young pirate’s life. Alexander, the pirate captain extraordinaire, and his cousin and first mate, Hallie, are joined by a menagerie of a crew: Mongo, the “mast-climbing monkey,” Linus, the “loud-mouthed lion,” and Fribbit, the “floppy frog.” Together they travel on their ship called the Flying Dragon, whose name was chosen for its fear-inducing qualities.

Without a wind to lift their sails, Captain No Beard and his crew find themselves marooned on a desert island, or as he says, “stuck in the doldrums.” The crew decides to make the best of the situation and sets about enjoying their day. Cloud watching, beach playing, and sand castle building top their list of activities. Seeing his crew enjoying themselves, Captain No Beard tries to steal some of the fun for himself with orders until he finds that no one wants to be around him.

Off to the ship by himself, he declares he will do everything himself. However, when a giant squid attacks the boat, he quickly realizes that he can’t go it alone and calls for help from his trusty crew. The crew is met with indecision, due to the earlier treatment received from their captain, but compassion prevails, as they vow to help first and talk to him later. With the help of the fearless crew, the Flying Dragon is saved, and Captain No Beard apologizes for his earlier actions.

Natural Parents Network: Children's book giveaway

The story has merit for parents and children alike, but I have to disagree with the title “Stuck in the Doldrums: A Lesson in Sharing.” The book isn’t about sharing at all. It is about perversion of power and how we use and abuse the power and trust given to us by others. It is a reminder that others, including children, deserve to have a voice and choice in their lives. As Captian No Beard learns, “Just because you’re in charge doesn’t mean you know everything. A good captain must always consider everyone’s feelings . . . .” With less of the playful pirate lingo found in the first of the series and with drawings which are less crisp, Stuck in the Doldrums still provides an easy segue into discussing an important issue between parents and children.

Please continue reading to learn more about Z-Man Games, which is offering two readers a giveaway of Mondo, a value of $40.

About Z-Man Games

Z-Man Games was formed in 1999 by New Yorker, Zev Shlasinger. Since that time, the company has been dedicated to bringing quality, high market games to players all over the world. Providing both card and board games, the company has produced such high ranking games as Agricola and Pandemic, as well as many others.

About Mondo

Mondo pits 1-4 players against the clock in three rounds. Players simultaneously search for tiles depicting various animals and environments out of a communal pile. Tiles must be placed one at a time and consecutively on the individual player’s board. When the timer rings, points are awarded for each animal, completed environments, and number tiles while volcanic tiles, empty spaces, and non-matching borders result in point deductions. Three levels of difficulty, additional goals, alternative wayd to gain and lose points, as well as rules for solitary play make Mondo a versatile tile board game.

Review

I long awaited the time when we could have family game night and enjoy quality family fun. When my children were little, game time seemed to be frustrating than fun. Someone told me that when they got older, it would get better, but I really didn’t want to wait that long. Around the time our oldest child turned 4 years old, we realized the solution. It wasn’t that our children were too young. It was that we were playing the wrong games. We gave up on most traditional board games and searched out games generally found in board gaming circles, such as ones produced by Rio Grande Games, Days of Wonder, Fantasy Flight Games, Repos Production, and Z-Man Games. The quality of the game made a world of difference.

Z-Man Games, once again, has provided a well thought out, quality game. Thick, quality printed boards and tiles make up the bulk of this game. The only mechanical part is the globe shaped timer. A combination of skill, planning, and opportunity are needed to play this game. A quick eye and hand aid in picking tiles but skill is needed to plan how to best use the resources available.

Unlike some other Z-Man games, Mondo only accommodates between 1 and 4 players. While I would prefer a game that could accommodate more players, I have hopes that an expansion game will later be produced. The smaller playing size hasn’t limited our family of 6 from playing, though. We’ve played multiple games with 2 adults and 4 children ages 10, 8, 5, and 2 1/2. The younger children have teamed up with an older family member for these fast paced fun games. While listed for players ages 8 and up, our family has found that our children can play games at much younger ages than those listed on game boxes. At times, we need to modify rules for them, but for the most part they are more than capable of playing serious boardgames.

Mondo’s world building theme, complete with land masses and animals, appeals to children while still being fun for adults. Three levels of difficulty and double-sided playing boards accommodate growing families while providing additional challenges and infinite possibilities for home rules means this can be played by families of all ages.

Mondo is a fun game for all ages and will provide hours of entertainment and family time. Pick up a copy of your own (or win one of 2 being given away by Z-Man Games) and have your own family game night!

About Sophisticated Play Apparel

My PhotoSophisticated Play Apparel is run by stay-at-home mom and natural parenting advocate, Angeliina Lawson. Angeliina began knitting as a creative outlet after becoming a mother. She found setting up a table full of art supplies difficult to accomplish with an active toddler and decided to find a medium which better suited her family’s current needs. Knitting allows her to move around and start and stop a project whenever needed. She nw makes “wearable art.”

Unless otherwise requested, Sophisticated Play Apparel uses only all natural fibers. Angeliina believes that natural fibers work best with our bodies’ natural ways of warming and cooling during the cooler seasons of the year. She also feels a connection to previous knitters and the people and animals which have provided the wool with which she works.

Sophisticated Play Apparel’s toddler cowls and wrist warmers are adorably cute. Who can’t be awed by such little clothing? The Merino wool is soft and you can’t beat machine washability when it comes to toddlers. The wool does lend challenges to families who suffer from wool allergies, but I have been told that plans are in the works to offer items in my very favorite yarn blend – cotton and beech wood!

Please continue reading to learn more about Knot Genie, which is offering our readers a giveaway of a Knot Genie Detangle Brush, a value of $20.

About Knot Genie

Knot Genie, the company and the detangle brush, was created by Rikki Mor, a mom of twin daughters who was desperate for a better solution to getting tangles out. After trying out every product she could find, she knew there had to be a better solution. Drawing upon the knowledge of which products had worked better for her family and what hadn’t worked at all, Rikki joined with an engineer to draw up the plans that would become the Knot Genie Detangling Brush.

About the Knot Genie Detangle Brush

The Knot Genie brush doesn’t look like a typical brush. There is no handle. There are no little balls, stiff bristles, or high tech gadgetry. The ergonomic design fits easily in your hand (right or left), making it more natural to use. Knot Genie works by having different lengths of flexible bristles which bend so that they don’t cause stress and harm the hair’s cuticle. Less pulling equals less  time spent detangling hair and fewer tears.

Review

I have four children whose hair range from slightly wavy to full spiral curls. Over the years of combing out tangles, there have been more than a few tears and not all of them were my children’s. While my sons tend to choose shorter hair styles that are less apt to tangle, my daughters have tangles galore. With a toddler whose fine super curly hair is constantly being tangled and an eight year old with a very sensitive scalp who has grown her hair out and does not want any tangles in it, hair combing has not been a favorite activity of mine recently.

I first heard about the Knot Genie detangling brush over a year ago. Listening to reviews from other families, they either loved it or hated it, and I was unsure whether it would work for us. However, we were recently reaching my limit. While I was managing my toddlers curls fairly well with the help of copious amounts of water and a comb, I wanted to cry every time I saw my older daughter with tears when we were trying to get the tangles out. I was ready to try anything. when I told her we were going to review a Knot Genie detangling brush, she exclaimed, “Yes!”

The first time we used it, it was better than the comb but we still had tears. It wasn’t magical. Then we read the handy tips and tricks on the website. For us, that was the key. While it may seem counter intuitive to those of us who grew up hearing never to brush wet hair, the combination of wet hair and the Knot Genie gave my eight year old her first tear free detangling experience in years. The same conbination of wet hair and the Knot Genie worked equally as well on my curly headed toddler and took less time than I had been spending with the comb.

I have to say that the Knot Genie get 2 thumbs up from my kids and would be a fantastic addition to any family struggling with tangle issues!

Please continue reading to learn more about Soapie Skyes, which is offering our readers a giveaway of a bottle of All Natural Balancing Shampoo, a value of $20.

Soapie SkyesAbout Soapie Skyes

The Soapie Skyes company was started by a chemical engineer from the Seattle area. Skye began her professional career at a company called CleanWell, where she learned about the differences between traditional manufactured products and the importance of using all natural products on our bodies. With those thoughts in mind, she started her own line of all natural products which were developed to be safe for both users and the environment.

Soapie Skyes follows the guidelines set forth by the Natural Product Association along with ther own dedication to using all natural ingredients. This means that every product made by Soapie Skyes is sulfate free and contains no SLS/SLES, parapens, cocomidopropyl betaine, petro-chemicals, or artificial fragrances. Only ingredients which are made completely from renewable resources are used to make Soapie Skyes products.

Review

Our family has tried all natural shampoos before with various results, much as with more mainstream commercially available products. Most just haven’t left our hair feeling the way we like. We keep going back to our old standby shampoo and conditioner, which by mainstream sources goes, is better than most. It doesn’t test its products on animals. It doesn’t use slave labor. They use recycled materials to make the bottles and encourage consumers to recycle the bottles yet again, and it washes and conditions our hair without drying it out or leaving a noxious film. However, when it comes to ingredients, it doesn’t quite meet my ideals.

We tried Soapie Skyes’s All Natural Balancing Shampoo with cautious optimism. Would it work? Would it be drying like so many other natural shampoos or leave a film behind? How could it possibly compare to a shampoo and conditioner combination? With just the first time, I was impressed. Not only did my hair get clean, but it felt like smooth, clean, conditioned hair. I waited after the second and third times of use for my hair to start to become dry and in need of some serious conditioning, but it didn’t. Never before have I been able to forego conditioner without disastrous results.

I have a new favorite shampoo, now. Just a little bit is needed to clean my hair and leave it feeling silky smooth. Best of all, I can feel good about using it on my family’s precious heads.

Double

Double

He never claimed to be the missing Cassiel. He just neglected to deny it. Given the choice between being a nobody, nameless and homeless, or being a somebody, with everything you’ve never had,  who wouldn’t hesitate? However, pretending to be someone else isn’t easy, especially when no one is who they seem.

Jenny Valentine’s young adult novel, Double (available for purchase tomorrow), begs the reader to ponder the essence of a person’s character – what defines a person and how that affects, or is affected by, an individual’s choices. Slow to build momentum, plot turns in the later portions of the book are certain to build suspense. Many of the characters seem lacking in dimension, but Chap’s struggles with ethical and moral decisions help readers identify with him. Despite annoying changes in tense during parts of the book, Double is an enjoyable book for teens and may lead to discussions.
