five-headed dragon…

Mythology is a popular topic at our house. Here is my 7 1/2 year old's rendition of a five-headed dragon: Notice the orange things in the ground. Those are worms for the dragon to eat. Apparently the dragon likes to roast them with his firey breath and eat them with barbecue sauce. There was an impromptu poem... Continue Reading →

strawberry shortcake…

Strawberry shortcake - one of summer's joys. We made vanilla pound cake, adding just enough lemon to give it some zing, It isn't quite as nice with strawberries as hot milk sponge cake, but it definitely works in a pinch. Even my husband, who grew up with Bisquick biscuits for strawberry shortcake, enjoyed the pound cake.... Continue Reading →

lazy summer days…

This post is part of the Carnival of Authentic Parenting hosted by mamapoekie. July's theme is summer holidays. As a family of introverts, we need home days. We crave home days. When we don't have them, everyone goes berserk. Not quite, but everyone is stressed and irritable and life doesn't move along very smoothly. In June we... Continue Reading →

banana nut pancakes…

educational toys…

When our first child was born, my husband mentioned to his parents that we really only wanted educational toys. They readily agreed, and we didn't think anything more about it until the holidays rolled around. It was then that we realized our definition of educational toys was vastly different from their definition of the term.... Continue Reading →

swimsuit shopping…

The warming temperatures and lure of sprinklers and pools had us out shopping for swimsuits earlier this month. Finding swimsuits for boys isn't very difficult, even if like me, you prefer not to buy anything with commercial characters or branded names on it. While colors and designs differ, they are all basically the same and... Continue Reading →

homemade bagels…

Our family enjoys a good bagel. Good bagels are harder to find out here in the Mid-West. The closest we have is Einstein Brothers. Store bought bagels just don't measure up. Periodically my husband gets a craving for bagels. When that happens, we pack our family up on a weekend morning and head over to... Continue Reading →
