Today was our second snow day in the past couple of weeks. As unschoolers, snow days don’t affect us quite like other families. We don’t have to worry about getting kids to school or not getting them to school. Life goes on, and we merely have a fun home day.
The big difference for us is that Daddy stays home. Having Daddy stay home is always exciting for all of us. Our family feels complete, whereas when he goes to work, we are missing him.
My three-and-a-half year old has yet to play in the snow this year, even though we’ve had snow on the ground for over a week. When asked if he wants to go play in the snow, he solemnly shakes his head and states, “No, thank you. I don’t like to be cold.” I tend to agree with him, though I think he may be missing out on something he might otherwise enjoy. Of course, when he shakes his head as his older siblings come in, semi-frozen, cheeks red and eyes tearing, saying that he’s glad he didn’t go outside with them, I remember to follow his lead.
Today, as his father and older siblings were coming in from outside, he ran in to where I was nursing his baby sister to tell me, “It’s fluffy outside!” Indeed, today’s snow is rather fluffy. I asked him if he wanted to go out and play in it. Another solemn shake came with, “It may be fluffy, but it’s still cold.”
I so often want my children to enjoy things I enjoyed when I was a child. Wonderful of you to follow his lead. He quite likely *wouldn’t* enjoy it because of the cold.
