Coconut. It brings to mind exotic mixed drinks, cookies with shredded coconut, and that unforgettable time you told the kids, “Sure. We can buy a coconut. It will be fun!” Then you spent an enormous amount of time in kitchen, long after the kids had wandered off, hammering away at the blasted coconut in an attempt to open it. Finally succeeding, with only limited damage to your hands, you excitedly called the kids back to try out the coconut milk and flesh, which demanded your own flesh in its fight to remain whole, and realized that they really don’t care for coconut. (ahem)
What most people don’t realize is that coconut oil is actually really good for you. Coconut oil is anti-bacterial, anti-carcinogenic, anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, anti-parasitic, anti-retroviral, and anti-viral. It is also an antioxidant and improves nutrient absorption while being non-toxic, all natural, and earth-friendly. As far as awesomeness goes, coconut oil ranks up there with breastmilk. I could ramble on about the virtues of coconut oil, but luckily I don’t need to. Jennifer at Hybrid Rasta Mama has already written about the wonders of coconut oil and its uses in her fantastic post 160 uses for Coconut Oil. I highly recommend that you read her post. It’s very informative.
The Book: Coconut Oil For Your Skin
Excited about coconut oil and how it may help your family?Unsure about how to go about using it? Jennifer has you covered there, too. Her new book, Coconut Oil For Your Skin has over 40 unique recipes to help you incorporate coconut oil into your daily lives.
From body wash to bath cookies, sugar scrubs to eczema salve, and shampoo to insect repellant, the recipes are all simple and easy to make. In fact, my children made many of the recipes in the book. Many of the ingredients are simple items you probably already have at home. The farthest you might have to go for ingredients is your nearest health food store.
Jennifer has thought of everything, including an introductory section explaining different types of carrier oils and essential oils for those who are new to making their own products. If you are into extreme sports, you might take up coconut cracking, but there is nothing scary about making these quick and easy, healthy recipes. I highly recommend the book to anyone who wants to explore using coconut oil for health.
