take time to be silly…

Sometimes we, as parents, get caught up in the day to day grind. It’s important to remember to take some time to be silly. It really changes everything and makes everyone feel better.

This morning we pulled into a parking lot. As I was parking, there was a fun song on the radio that was perfect for silly dancing, and that is what I did. Sitting in my seat, still buckled in my seatbelt, I started dancing away.

It took maybe 20 seconds for my two older children to see me. My 2 1/2 year old is still rear-facing, so he missed most of my antics. They stopped in their tracks, and via my rear-view mirror, I saw huge grins break out on their faces. The giggles started after that. The next thing I knew, I was being bombarded with hugs and kisses, big smiles, and “I love you, Mom.” My daughter got some of her own dancing in, too. The day seemed better to me and my heart felt lighter.

A mere two or three minutes had passed and one simple, silly act had brightened all of our days and helped me to connect with my children. A couple of drivers gave me strange and inquiring looks as I danced my silliness.  I merely smiled and waved. Then, they too, smiled. I think I may have brighted their days.
