Krystal Mclaughlin’s new book The Witches Lottery provides readers of Young Adult fiction with a strong leading female and a story which revolves around the prophecy of a great female witch rather than the typical male. I enjoyed her take on the differing directions of those touched with supernatural abilties and the concept of a dormant gene. I have long waited for such a book and am thrilled that my children, especially my daughters, will have such books to read when they are older.
Sub-plots supplemented the main story, leaving room for expansion in future books of the series, while giving the book some twists. The book is a short and the story could be more developed. I will admit that I wasn’t thrilled with the writing at the beginning of the book, although I found the issue to be less noticeable the further I read, both a product of the improved writing and the developing story. I look forward to future writing from this debut author and expect her to only get better with time.
