My children recently picked out a new toothbrush holder. It’s a green, striped submarine. While it wouldn’t have been my choice, they all agreed on this particular one. The bathroom it is in is light blue, has a light blue and sage green striped shower curtain, and the kids all have sage green puppy ponchos. I wanted something to tie the bright green submarine into the theme of the bathroom.
I asked my children to imagine what they might see if they were under the sea. Then they got to work making all sorts of artistic creations. They each had a stack of creations. We went through them and picked items that each of the kids had made. Then I took their artwork and incorporated them together in watercolor paintings.
The top submarine with the sea monster was inspired by an 1950s sci-fi cover my daughter and I saw. Using various drawings from the kids, we created something we liked even better. Some of my son’s labelled drawings reminded me of biology journals, so we decided to make a painting based on that aspect. I love that we were able to incorporate some of his handwriting into it. A couple of inexpensive white frames finished off the look for the bathroom.

Those are great pictures! I love when kids can display their artwork with pride. Mine get to do it less and less these days, but maybe we can come up with an idea for when we do their room this summer!
