Cara Lynn Shultz’s Spellbound is a fairy tale with a twist. Emma is the poor little girl, having lost her twin brother, her mother, and now is permanently scarred from a car accident caused by her drunk step-father. Living with her great-aunt promises a change for Emma’s life, along with a new exclusive school. Cue in the handsome, rich guy who has his pick of any girl he wants. Only he only wants Emma. Luckily the plot doesn’t stop there. Reincarnation, ghosts, and other supernatural features keep the story from being just another variation on Cinderella.
The characters in Spellbound are believable, and the high school experience hits a little too close to reality, appealing to the young adult audience. While the supernatural twists add dimension to the storyline, the book would have benefitted from some more editing.
