Talaris Institute, founded in 2000, is dedicated to supporting parents with research on early childhood topics such as social and emotional development, language and communication, physical development, and learning. In April of this year, Talaris came out with two new books to help parents and children discuss feelings.
Baby Feelings is a board book targeted for babies and young toddlers. Solid block colors and simple illustrations nicely compliment the full page photos of other babies exhibiting various emotions. It’s a lovely board book to begin talking about feelings with yong children, as well as a great time to introduce signs for the various feelings. My main complaint is with the use of the word shy rather than reserved, although for most that wouldn’t be an issue.
Big Feelings is a gorgeous, full color picture book for older toddlers and preschool age children. Full page illustrations feature beautiful animals illustrating various emotions next to solid block color pages with simple writing describing the feelings the animal has. Questions at the end of each page invite parents and caregivers to discuss the feeling with children.
It’s never too early to begin discussing feelings with your children. Both of these books are wonderful ways to introduce discussions and share some warm snuggle time together.
